Shhh … No One Has to Know You’re Wearing Braces
You still have nightmares from middle school. You’ve got a mouthful of braces, but what’s worse is that your mom made you wear your headgear in front of everyone. You eat lunch without incident (unless being pointed and laughed at is an incident) and reach in to your tiny pack of rubber bands when you accidentally fling one across the table. Later that day, in PE, you grab a towel to wipe the sweat from your face and it gets caught on one of your brackets. You wake up from this nightmare in a cold sweat. There is NO WAY you’re going through that again. I’ve got some great news for you, though: Orthodontics have come a long way since then and you can now enjoy straight teeth without the tortures of traditional braces. How?
Invisible Aligners, at Your Service
These days, many patients opt for invisible aligners — such as Invisalign or ClearCorrect — to straighten their smiles. Instead of brackets, bands, and archwires, invisible aligners gently shift your teeth into position with a series of clear, plastic aligner trays. Every week or so, you wear a new set of trays, each one getting you closer and closer to your desired look. The most obvious benefit is their subtlety; no one has to know that you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. There are other benefits, as well, including:
- Freedom to eat your favorite foods! If you had braces when you were younger, you might remember the lengthy “Do Not Eat” list that your dentist gave you. With invisible aligners, you simply remove the trays while you eat, giving you complete and total freedom to eat your favorite foods.
- The ability to thoroughly clean your teeth. With traditional braces, you had to use floss threaders and dental picks to get into all the nooks and crannies of your teeth and braces. With invisible aligners, however, you remove your trays to brush and floss. No tricky tools required.
- A beautiful smile in less time. Kids who had traditional braces seemed to wear them for years! Clear aligners can give you the same results in nearly half the time. What’s better is that, without a mouth full of metal, you can see your smile transform before your very eyes!
If you’ve been contemplating orthodontics but feel guilty doing something nice for yourself, consider this: Orthodontic treatment also corrects jaw misalignments, facial asymmetry, and helps to prevent decay and disease. It might as well be considered medically necessary!
