Summer Specific Dental Care
Summer is a magical time of year. From the summer breaks of childhood to taking summer vacations as an adult, there is just something about it. Whether it’s the warm weather, longer days, or more time for fun, everyone loves summer. Summer isn’t all fun and games, though. With the seasonal lifestyle change comes potential health concerns when it comes to those pearly whites. Before you and your kids head out for a family bike ride, consider the following:
- Sugary Drinks
Extra activity, sun exposure, and increased temperatures all create the need for extra hydration. Hydration itself is not the problem, it’s the drinks you choose to get the job done. Energy drinks like RedBull, sports drinks like GatorAde, sodas, and even lemonade are full of sugars that coat your teeth and make them vulnerable to decay. Instead of a sweet drink, stick with water. If you do indulge in a sweet drink, be sure to brush your teeth after you finish.
- Outdoor Activities
At Wayne Dental Care, we encourage our patients to be active. We love the idea of you going for a run, playing a pickup basketball game, or enjoying some volleyball at the beach. The problem, however, is when you participate in vigorous activities without a mouth guard. For whatever reason, we tend to be more carefree over the summer; we just need to be carefree while wearing a mouthguard.
This one is going to shock you: swimming is hazardous to your teeth. That’s right, a dip in the pool can affect your smile. The reason? Despite its reputation for bleaching, chlorine can actually stain your teeth. We know you’re not gargling with pool water, but your teeth are inevitably exposed. The next time you take a dip, take a few minutes to brush your teeth afterwards. If your toothbrush isn’t handy, then rinse with tap water the first chance you get.
Whether you’re engaging in leisure activities like lounging by the pool or you’re engaging in adventurous summer activities that might harm your teeth, contact Wayne Dental Care today. We want to keep your smile healthy and gleaming in every season.
