Tooth Troubles
At Wayne Dental Care, Dr. Handel and his team see patients for a number of reasons: cleanings, restorative dentistry, cosmetic procedures, etc. We can narrow the most common tooth troubles down to three problems: cavities, gum disease, and cracked or chipped teeth.
Cavities
Cavities are caused when plaque forms on your teeth and erode the enamel. Once they’ve made it through the enamel, they are able to penetrate the dentin, creating a cavity. Left untreated, cavities can cause tooth pain, headaches, even infection. They can be prevented by regular brushing and flossing, particularly after meals. Plaque tends to collect along the gumline, so when you brush, focus on those areas.
Gum Disease
Gum disease (or gingivitis) is caused by the accumulation of bacteria beneath the gumline of your teeth. Those with gum disease often experience pain, swollen and bleeding gums, bad breath, and even loose teeth. Without treatment, teeth fail to be anchored by the gums and jaw; in fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. To avoid bacteria build-up underneath your gum line, be sure to brush at least twice a day and floss daily.
Cracked or Chipped Teeth
Traumatic tooth injuries are often associated with childhood or contact sports. The truth is that even chewing on an ice cube can crack or chip your teeth. This type of injury will not heal by itself; receiving dental care ASAP can not only repair your teeth and minimize discomfort, it can prevent infection of the jaw and gums, as well.
